As more of us are wearing facial coverings to go out to the store, or in the workplace, we are facing the dreaded “maskne.” Add to that the increased stress being felt by many, due to COVID-19, and we have the perfect storm for triggering acne outbreaks.
“Maskne” is the term being used for mask-related acne.
Acne occurs when oil and dead skin cells clog your pores. These are known as blackheads, whiteheads, pimples or zits. When bacteria or yeast get into the pores the resultant acne lesions swell, become red and produce pus.
Acne is not just a problem of puberty. It can affect anyone at any age – from infants to seniors. Those with chronic skin issues and sensitive skin are more susceptible to acne.
Wearing a facial covering traps warm air around your face creating the warm, humid environment that yeast and bacteria thrive in. Friction on your face from the facial covering also increases the chance of clogging pores and causing skin irritation.
To prevent acne:
- wash hands before putting on or removing a facial covering
- wear a clean face covering
- change your facial covering frequently, especially after sweating
- wash re-usable face coverings with a fragrance-free detergent
- clean your face with a gentle cleanser (e.g. Cetaphil) regularly and as soon as possible after removing a facial covering
- use an oil-free (non-comedogenic) moisturizer (e.g. Cetaphil or Cerave Hydrating Moisturizer) to hydrate and protect your skin
Generally, prevention of acne includes removing the cause of the acne. However, facial coverings are going to be part of our new “normal” for the unforeseeable future, so we need to be more diligent with our face washing routines!
There are several products available for acne treatment without a prescription. These products contain:
- benzoyl peroxide
- unclogs pores and decreases bacterial growth
- available as a lotion, wash, gel and soap
- product needs to be used regularly for 6-8 weeks before you will see improvement
- salicylic acid
- dries up lesions
- available as a spot treatment and wash
