Naloxone: It Can Save a Life

Naloxone: It Can Save a Life

There were 16,364 suspected opioid-related deaths in Canada between January 2016 and March 2020, of which 96% were accidental. (https://health-infobase.canada.ca)

It can happen to anyone

It could happen to you or someone you love

The majority of opioid overdoses happen at home when the person is alone (Dr. Theresa Tam, Chief Public Health Officer of Canada)

What is Naloxone?

  • It’s a drug/antidote that works quickly (2 to 5 min) to temporarily reverse an opioid overdose by restoring breathing (some examples of opioids are: fentanyl, oxycodone, tramadol, hydromorphone, morphine, heroin)
  • It works for only 20-90 minutes but the effects of most opioids last longer, so that means that the naloxone can stop working before the opioid drugs are gone from the body

If I Think Someone has Overdosed, What Do I Do?

  • Always call for help – call 9-1-1 and stay at the scene
  • Give Naloxone if you have it
  • Stay with the person. You might need to give another dose of naloxone
  • Know that the Good Samaritan Act protects you from simple drug possession charges
  • Carry a naloxone kit if you or someone you know takes opioids and replace it when it is expired

Can I hurt someone if I’m wrong and it’s not an overdose?

  • It’s safe for all ages
  • It only works if there are opioids in the person’s system
  • It’s not addictive

How can I get a Naloxone kit?

  • You can get it at most pharmacies (we carry it)
  • It is free of charge and we will show you how to use it
  • You don’t need to have a prescription
