Most people have heard of premenstrual syndrome or PMS, but have your heard of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD)?
Roughly 5% of women experience PMDD.
PMDD is more severe than PMS. It occurs when hormones levels change starting 1-2 weeks before menstruation (period). It tends to go away 2-3 days after menstruation begins. This is not the end of PMDD however, as many women experience a feeling of helplessness in anticipation of their next cycle.
The symptoms of PMDD include:
- feelings of sadness/despair
- thoughts of suicide
- anxiety
- panic attacks
- mood swings
- irritability or anger
- lack of interest in day-to-day activities
- trouble focusing
- food cravings
- difficulty sleeping
The symptoms of PMDD also include the common symptoms of PMS:
- bloating
- breast tenderness
- headache
- joint or muscle pain.
The exact cause of PMDD is unknown but it appears to be related to hormonal changes.
The cycles of symptomatic periods that a woman with PMDD experiences causes negative cumulative effects on her life. These effects include, relationships that are often strained and high divorce rates. This condition requires treatment.
If you have any questions about PMDD ask your physician or call one of our pharmacists.
