Seasonal Allergies vs COVID vs Common Cold

Seasonal allergies are now upon us.  The trees are budding and that brings about tree pollen allergies – which have hit many with a vengeance.  The common cold is still lurking around as well!  Combine seasonal allergies and the common cold with COVID-19 and this leads to a great deal of confusion.

Many are left wondering is my itchy, running nose the coronavirus?

Common symptoms of seasonal allergies:

  • itchy, watery eyes
  • itchy nose
  • sneezing
  • runny congested nose
  • sore throat
  • cough due to postnasal drip

Treatment for seasonal allergies include over-the-counter antihistamines, eye drops and steroid nasal sprays.  Symptoms caused by COVID-19 would not respond to these treatments.

Common symptoms of the common cold:

  • runny congested nose
  • sore throat
  • headache
  • general feeling of unwell
  • cough and sneezing due to postnasal drip

Symptoms, such as fever and shortness of breath are not common symptoms of the common cold.  The common cold can be treated with over-the-counter products to help manage symptoms.

Common symptoms of COVID-19:

  • fever
  • cough
  • shortness of breath
  • fatigue
  • loss of appetite

If you have the above symptoms please call Public Health 1-800-841-2729 or visit https://www.lakeridgehealth.on.ca/en/patientsandvisitors/covid-19-physician-assessment-clinic-information-for-health-care-providers.asp

Our pharmacists are still available, over the phone or in person, to offer recommendations for seasonal allergies and the common cold.

Today, creating customized medical solutions has again become the answer to accurately meeting the needs of every patient. Mainstream drug manufacturing doesn't always meet everyones medical requirements so compounding pharmacists are in demand to create personalized prescriptions that are not commercially available.
