Tick Talk

Since we are in lockdown and the weather is getting warmer we thought it prudent to have a Tick Talk!

People will be taking advantage of the nicer weather to start working on their lawns and gardens, but we need to remember those pesky ticks. Often ticks are found in wooded areas, areas of tall grass, brush and undergrowth, but, they can be found wherever there is grass.

It is important to be vigilant!  Search yourself, family members (including the four-legged ones) for ticks when you come indoors. Ticks like warm, moist areas like armpits, groin and the scalp. If you find a tick remove it by grabbing at the base of the tick and pulling upward.

Tick removal products, such as Tick Twisters are available and easy to use.  Bug repellents, containing icardin 20% (Deet-free), can provide 12 hours of protection from ticks.

Why are we concerned about ticks?

Ticks can spread Lyme disease. It takes at least 24 hours, likely closer to 36 to 48 hours, for a tick to transmit Lyme disease to a person. This is why doing a tick check after being outdoors is so important.

If you find a tick that may have been attached for over 24 hours, please call your physician.  The earlier treatment is started, the more likely a complete cure is possible.
